Advertising

Advertising is critically important for any small business in order to survive. With so much competition between businesses both in-town and outside of Plainfield, effective advertising has never been more important. Your three main goals in advertising is to: (1) gain new customers; (2) promote sales; and (3) with the advent of social media, connecting with your customers. Luckily there are many ways to advertise, many of which are beyond the storefront windows. Most shop owners that choose not to advertise either think advertising is too costly, not effective, or simply don't know all their advertisement options. In reality, there are many ways to get your business name out there and advertise promotions totally free (or for a low price) and effectively. With the internet almost everywhere, this is an invaluable resource that has spawned a new way to advertise: via social media, apps, and internet-based services, such as Yelp. The more you advertise on these platforms, the more your business name becomes recognizable and attract people wanting to shop or try new restaurants.

Remember, most advertising options are beyond the storefront, so don't clog it with signs!

Use Yelp

Yelp is a website that allows customers of local businesses to leave a review about their experience at your establishment. Use Yelp to respond to both good and bad reviews to get people to return to your establishment and show that your business cares about its customer's experiences. The website boasts an app for iOS and Android phones along with a huge, loyal community. Yelp also offers the ability for businesses to pay to have their listing appear at the top of search results, or feature ads on the pages of their competitors.

Embrace the Internet

Businesses grow 40% faster with a website. That's why the city has teamed up with Google for it's Get Your Business Online campaign. Start your website today and be sure to set up an online store to get more sales!

After setting up your new site, make sure you use the power of online ads through Google's Adwords, and online local business directories, such as GoogleBing to get your hours, location, website and phone number in their search engines, making it easier for people to find you.

Social Media

Social Media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat are heavily used by the younger demographic and all feature ads that your business can purchase to connect with this demographic. Set up your social media accounts in order to connect with your customers, show that your business is professional and tech savvy, and most of all -Advertise your business!

Use Youtube to showcase your business's merchandise and the interior and exterior of your store.

Offer Promotions

Give people a reason to come shop! Offer seasonal and holiday savings. Take advantage of days when people are off work, such as Memorial Day and Labor Day so people will have time to visit your business to take advantage of the sale. Also, don't forget about advertising for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday to compete against online and big box retailers. Be sure that your promotions are enticing enough for the average person to want to pull over and shop! Check out these promotion tips from WhizBang! Training.

Window Display

Love at first sight. That's the feeling a customer should have when visiting your business for the first time. Having an attractive window display is critical to the success of any business. Make sure your business has a strong theme, looks neat and welcoming, and positively contributes to the surrounding area. This way people will notice your business for looking professional, clean and unique. Window displays should never blocked with advertisements or merchandise. Check out our Storefront Design guide for more info on window displays.

Events

Host events! That's the best way to get people in your store to experience all you have to offer. The city offers FREE Grand Openings for all businesses where the Mayor welcomes your business into town. Also, try offering out-of-the-box events such as a book signing, or connect with local artists and have a small shindig for fans of the artist to come hear music and shop or eat.
