Storeowner Kiev Martinez founded Obscure Arts Co. in 2009, and opened his Plainfield store in September of 2015, making the business one of Plainfield's newest. The boutique sells religious goods, incense, candles, performs tarot card readings and carries many traditional Latin American "spiritual & magickal" products. The interior gives off a mystical and youthful vibe and smells of incense throughout.
According to Wikipedia, a botánica is a retail store that sells folk medicine, religious candles and statuary, amulets, and the products regarded as magical or as alternative medicine. They also carry oils, incense, perfumes, scented sprays (many of which are thought to have special properties) and various brand name health care products. Obscure Arts carries many organic products and ingredients, and makes many of the products that they sell.
There are few stores of this kind in Plainfield. Obscure Arts has a strong selection of candles and scented items that would make an excellent gift for any event. For those interested in what their future holds, get a tarot or palm reading.
The minimalist exterior is complimented with a neat, inviting, and well organized interior. Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Jewish and other religious goods can be found lining the shelves, echoing our diverse community in Plainfield. Many rare and hard to find items can be sourced from Obscure Arts, everything from Powdered Amethyst, dried leaves of belladonna collected under a full moon, a shofar inscribed with verses from the Talmud, and even specially designed ceremonial robes with the names of the 72 angels embroidered on it.
According to their website, Martinez, has studied the Art of Magick and spirituality since he was 8 years old. A life long dedicate to the Greek Goddess Hecate and to the Art of Magick, Kiev has spent 20+ years learning and studying everything he has found in his path. Kiev has created various systems of magickal workings and classifications that are used by the OAC, and is on his way to being a published author of magickal works. An initiate of both Dominican Voodoo (The 21 Divisions (2004)), and La Regla de Ocha (a Priest of Elegba, 2009), Kiev is a believer that every person should have a little bit of magick in their life.
